Why Chlorine Dioxide?

Water treatment to prevent the proliferation of legionellosis bacteria is one of the main challenges for hot water recirculation networks in water-sanitary systems.  Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) use has replaced that of chlorine (hypochlorous acid) for water treatment and disinfection because of the many advantages brought by a higher biocidal and antiviral power, as well as it being independent of the pH of the water to treat.

Chlorine dioxide is the safest and the most effective way to prevent legionellosis, especially in cooling towers and hot water systems, by affecting and breaking down pathogens and the biofilm, (a bacterial aggregation that is the natural habitat in which both Legionella bacteria, the cause of legionellosis, and other species of bacteria proliferate).  Using chlorine dioxide for disinfection of water has been demonstrated to be more than 10 times more effective against bacteria, algae, fungi and viruses.

Chlorine dioxide is not aggressive toward pipes and its effect is longer-lasting, (up to several days), and over a wider area from the injection point, ensuring the treatment of a whole plumbing system, even by using a small amount of product. It is commonly used as a ‘dispersive’ treatment which means the chlorine dioxide is dosed into the water system and travels around the entire water system. This ensures a ‘residual’ level of CLO2 which can continue to kill bacteria in all areas of the system that it reaches and not just at the point of use.

LOTUS “Easy” system produces, doses and controls chlorine dioxide for water disinfection.  Chlorine dioxide is produced from diluted base chemicals: acid-chlorite process from hydrochloric acid and sodium chlorite.  Chlorine dioxide produced by LOTUS EASY is set to be proportional to the circulating water flow.  There is no storage of chlorine dioxide hence no chlorine dioxide gas or concentrated solutions exist outside of process application.
